Love and Coffee
Carl and Lori faced all the challenges that most military couples faced. The exception to the challenges they faced is that their marriage exceeded the lifespan of many military marriages. When your forever love stares you in the face, you can either accept the blessing or fight your reality. Carl knew Lori was the one as he shares with us below.
“Little did I know I would win the lottery back in 1987. I had just returned from a deployment to Central America and was moving in with some Army buddies. My roommate’s girlfriend invited a friend of hers named Lori to the housewarming. I was still adjusting to life after deployment and wasn’t looking for a girlfriend, much less, a wife. But it was love at first sight. And after dating for a year and a half (including a separation of 6 months for another deployment to the Middle East), I asked her to marry me. We’ve been married for 28 years and are even more in love now.
.
We have 2 amazing children, who are starting their own lives and make us incredibly proud. Denai just graduated and is starting her career in marketing and advertising. Trevor is currently deployed with the 19th SF Group of the Utah National Guard and will return to the Univ of Utah when he gets home. We love to ski as a family in the beautiful Wasatch Mountains of Utah in the world’s best powder. And we regularly congregate in the kitchen to prepare food, cook, drink wine, talk, laugh and eat amazing meals together.
Lori and I enjoy an active lifestyle. We regularly ski, rock climb, hike, camp, bike, scuba dive, and workout together. But we also enjoy just sitting together and reading. A mutual love of great food and cooking means hosting friends and family around our table on a regular basis. And we love to travel and explore new places.
We started a business together named Alpha Coffee and run that jointly. So it goes without saying that we love to sit and enjoy great coffee together every day.
We make happiness last by communicating openly and honestly with each other in a kind and caring way to resolve conflicts early before they become bigger issues than they should be. And we take time to enjoy each other’s company. We work together and play together and make each other laugh and smile.” – Carl Churchill
On Sept. 11, 2010, we were co-founded by LTC(R) Carl Churchill, a combat veteran with 21 years of service as both an enlisted soldier and officer, and his wife Lori Churchill, a military spouse and coffee lover. The company started out as Lock-n-Load Java, selling exclusively over the web. In 2016 the company rebranded to Alpha Coffee, selling both online and via other retailers. In 2017, Alpha will open their first coffee shop, staying close to home with their first location at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon in Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
From the start, Carl and Lori wanted to create a different kind of company guided by the principles they lived by. They specifically promote the warrior mentality and ethos – the Alpha lifestyle. This encompasses serving others, living a life of honor, embracing challenge, constantly striving for excellence, staying physically and mentally sharp, connecting with the outdoors and their natural world, and… drinking lots of awesome coffee!
